Salim Ammari, a talented artist from Syria, immigrated to Canada over two years ago, struggling with the isolation that many newcomers face. His creative talents, celebrated in Syria, were left dormant as he navigated the challenges of adapting to a new life. But everything changed when he joined the Kinbridge Community Association Newcomer Outreach Program.

Cambridge Newcomer Outreach Staff at Kinbridge, including Aoussaf Arrout, Mariana Gebeil, and Abdifatah Musse quickly recognized Salim’s artistic potential and supported him in reconnecting with his passion for art. Every week, they provided a space for older adult newcomers like Salim to learn about Canada, build community, and integrate into their new environment. Through their encouragement, Salim began sharing his stunning calligraphy at Kinbridge events, using art as a means to express his experiences and heal from the trauma of displacement.

With the continued support of the Kinbridge team, Salim gained the confidence to showcase his work at meetings, events and now galleries. His daughter, Nahed Ammarinadour, hosted his first art gallery in Canada, which was a resounding success. The exhibition had an amazing turnout and many of his pieces were sold. This moment marked a major step in continuing his career, rebuilding what he had once established back home, and connecting with his new community.

Salim’s story is a powerful testament to the transformative impact of the Newcomer Outreach Program here in Cambridge Ontario. Support and encouragement like this helped Salim share his art to a new audience, build meaningful connections, and inspire others to reclaim their passions!
